Assessment of structurally-related or homologous groups of substances (as a group or 'category') is a feature of REACH and the HPV programmes. It is a useful approach to justify and optimise use of predictive methods and read-across for filling data gaps with the aim of minimising further testing requirements. This form of assessment is appropriate for any group where consistency in chemical properties and behaviour is to be expected based on structural similarity.

Permits validation of existing QSAR methods, highlighting any need for correction factors. |
May allow development of completely new QSAR. |
Validation of any data of uncertain reliability by weight of evidence. |
Possible direct read-across. |
