REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) has been adopted and came into force in the EU on 1st June 2007. Any company involved in the manufacture or importation of chemicals has to comply with the Regulation. It represents the culmination of a complete review of the regulation of chemicals in the EU, replacing the previous legislation (which regulated substances already on the market, and new substances, separately) with a single Regulation, which has a consistent approach. New substances must now be registered in accordance with the regulation. Substances already on the market must be registered in accordance with a phase-in timetable.

There are a number of industry initiatives to help:

The Chemicals Industry Association has launched REACHReady, a Service network which provides information and tools, and links clients with service providers (e.g. contract laboratories, consultants). PFA is very pleased to be an approved Service Provider to CIA REACHReady.

Cefic has set up ReachCentrum to facilitate the preparation for and implementation of REACH, initially with help desk services. PFA is working closely with a number of CEFIC Sector Groups on their REACH compliance activities.

The European Chemicals Bureau has overseen the development of Guidance Documents for REACH. PFA has provided input to Working Groups developing these documents.
